Episode 2.11 - Dive, begins with Joan pushing a book cart at work. She puts some books away and then notices a girl sitting in an arm chair reading a book. The girl speaks without looking up

Judith - Hey, girlfriend. (Turing around to see Joan) I'm so bored! When can we get outta here?

Joan - (Clearly shocked) What are you doing... alive?

Judith - Waiting for you. Come on. Joaneth can be together all day. You know you want to

Joan - I have to work, Judith. (The pile of books on Joan’s cart is suddenly 10 feet tall, as well as several other stacks on top of shelves)

Judith - Don't be scared, jo-jo. Come on.

Judith and Joan run through the aisle of the store as books fly off the piles trying to hit them. They are both laughing.

Then we see that it is all a dream. Joan is asleep in bed. She smiles and slowly wakes up. Then we cut to the high school. There are booths set up along the hall for team sports try outs. Joan, Adam, Grace and Luke walk together.

Adam - Oh, great. Another chance for us to feel like a sub-defective.

Luke - Fighting over balls, adding muscle mass for no socially productive use-- it's an evolutionary anomaly.

Joan - Friedman tried gymnastics.

Grace - Yeah, and almost lost his jewels on the vault. Ha ha. Where is he, anyway?

Luke - He's on a cruise with his family, celebrating his grandmother's new kidney.

Helen - (Coming down the hall) Hey, guys. Oh, um... listen, Fran called and she said that they finished Judith's headstone. (Joan snickers) I told her I'd see if any of you wanted to come along. (Joan is snickers)

Adam - Sure.

Joan - I'm sorry. Judith would just think that's lame. What, going to look at a rock?

Helen - Well, it's up to you. We're going to the cemetery Thursday after school. I can drive anyone who's interested.

Adam - Cool.

Helen - Thank you.

Joan - Oh, come on, don't you think that's dumb?

Adam and Grace are both silent.

Adam - (Changes the subject, he has to leave) Meet you after school?

Joan - You'd better. (He kisses her)

Luke - (To Grace) See you later. (Tries to kiss her)

Grace - Mm-hmm. (She ducks out of the way) Oh, yeah, later.

Joan leaves the group and is joined by God. Cute boy god. All the girls around them are looking and talking about him.

God - Hi, Joan.

Joan - Do girls always hit on you with that look? (Some girls near them smile at him) Oh, they do. Hitting on god? That's gross.

God - I'd like you to do something that scares you.

Joan - Uh...lots of things scare me. You, actually. You scare me. Can we be a little bit more specific?

God - For me, that's pretty specific.

Joan - And I still can't ask why.

God - You can ask...

Joan - ha ha.

A jock at a table behind Joan strikes up a conversation.

Tommy - Hi. Tommy Belkin. I'm captain of the diving team. You can call me captain Tommy. You interested in diving?

Joan - Well... captain Tommy... I was watching the Olympics, you know, as I flipped my way to MTV cribs... um, so, tell me, is the high board still really... high?

Tommy - Are you kidding me. Really high?

He laughs at her and we cut to opening credits.

We return to the show the next morning. Luke, Helen and Will are already in the kitchen.

Will - Excuse me! (reaching to get the coffee) Are we playing twister?

Helen - (To Kevin who has just come in) Oh, you look so nice. Is that a new sweater?

Luke - And a litre of cologne?

Will - Oh, I smell romance.

Kevin - Someone's in a disturbingly good mood.

Will - Gotta enjoy the good days.

Joan - (joining them from upstairs) [Sniff] Who bathed in Drakkar?

Kevin - Said "apply liberally." Pardon me for following directions.

Helen - Kevin has a date with Beth tonight.

Kevin - (Joan gives Kevin a “way to go” slap on the arm) Spokeswoman. Cool. Makes it so much easier than talking for myself.

Helen - (To Joan) Oh, what's with you and the diving team? Coach Kennedy mentioned she saw your name on the try-out list.

Luke - You're trying out for diving?

Joan - Yes, I am trying out for diving.

Helen - But you're afraid of heights.

Joan - Mom, do you want me to be scared for the rest of my life?

Helen - If you have vertigo, you can lose your balance, fall, hit your head.

Will - Helen.

Helen - The school shouldn't allow something that dangerous.

Will - Good for you, sweetheart. Luke, you should do it, too. You loved diving when we used to go to that pool in Farrington.

Helen - Will...

Joan - Luke in a Speedo. They don't make enough blindfolds.

Kevin - Dad, you're thinking of me. Luke was terrified.

Luke - No. No, actually, I was just afraid I'd never be as good as you.

Will - You should get back into it.

Helen - He's not interested.

Will - We're just talking.

Helen - Haven't we all had enough to deal with lately? Jumping a thousand feet into a puddle is ridiculous.

Kevin - Actually, mom, they replaced the puddle with a swimming pool because kids were getting muddy.

Helen - You, of all people, should understand caution.

Joan - All right. Mom, it's just diving, ok? See ya. Don't want to be late for my... lion tamer's club.

We cut to the police station. Will and Carlisle are walking. Carlisle is catching will up on the “Judith Montgomery” case.

Carlisle - So, guy's a street dealer. Narcs set up a sting, arrest him. Routine. On a hunch, they give him the location of Judith Montgomery's murder and the type of X. Offer him a deal in case he has anything. He describes a guy he knows.

Will - You're saying he identified the same guy Ryan Peters did?

Carlisle - To the birthmark on his cheek. Joey Edwards. Street level dealer. Narcs know him.

Lucy - (coming in from the other room) Did he catch ya up? Well, it just got better. The guy's been a-wall since the girl's murder.

Will - I'll get a warrant, send a couple of uniforms to bag his apartment. If I can get your ok.

Lucy - Oh, gee, let me think... yes. I think I'll be giving you a blank check on this.

Cut to Lily and Helen at the coffee shop.

Lily - So the woman-- I mean, she's maybe, I don't know, 5 foot, 90 pounds-- heaves the chair at this giant of a guy who's cheating on her and hits him right in the temple, and he just loses it. So if it wasn't for the guys restraining him--

Helen - wait. Why are we talking about the Jerry Springer show?

Lily - Modern day David and Goliath. Look, it's about courage and our overwhelming need to confront odds.

Helen - So shouldn't there be a part where David's mother tells him how dangerous it's gonna be? Where's the part that urges caution? It's like the bible was written by Johnny Knoxville.

Lily - You like jackass, too? Did you see the one where Steve-o, he put chicken in his pants and alligators were snapping at him and he was... oh. No. We're not riffing on this one now, are we?

Helen - We just buried one of Joan's friends. I can't see Kevin getting in a car without thinking about-- I-- why... does god put kids in harm's way? Why would he do that?

Lily - Hey, why does he always put a cigarette machine in front of me when I'm trying to stop? Look, Helen, the truth is we never get out of school. There's always another test that we're afraid we'll fail. It's...natural to be a little pissed at the teacher.

To the high school. Luke and Grace are sitting in their closet.

Grace - So we got home from the bat mitzvah. She drags out the photo album and gets totally hammered while narrating the complete Polonsky family history, starting in Poland. I heard her even through the headphones in my room.

Luke - I don't know how you put up with that.

Grace - Like I have a choice?

Luke - (getting defensive) Isn't that what your bat mitzvah was all about-- taking responsibility?

Grace - You don't wanna go there, dude.

Luke - Of all people, I think you would have the courage to make her get help! What are you so afraid of?

Grace - (Yelling now and standing up to leave) What the hell do you know about courage, dude? You hide in your head. You're obsessed with science and formulas and mind games so that you don't really have to live. Have you ever taken a risk ever?

Luke - Grace--

Grace - the most you're ever gonna be is a pathetic science teacher who never really went for what he really wanted.

At dive practice after school. Everyone is doing a type of sit ups where they lift their legs instead of their shoulders. Tommy is doing good.. Glynis is there.. She’s not bad.. Joan is almost dying. She does one sit up for every 3 of Tommy’s

Tommy: 14...15... 16...

Glynis - Aah!

Coach Kennedy - Feel the pain, miss Figliola?

Glynis - Definitely do.

Coach - Higher, miss Girardi. This isn't gym class. I can punt you outta here on a whim.

Tommy - 21...22... 23...24... 25...

Joan - [Loud groan] Siiiix!

Coach Kennedy - And relax.

Tommy - (Showing off his 6pack) Hey, you want a stomach like this, you're looking at 200 of those a day, not to mention sit-ups.

Joan - I think I'll do... most of mine at home, that way... when I get here, I'll only have a few left.

Luke comes into the pool area.

Coach Kennedy - Can I help you, Mr. Girardi?

Luke - Yeah, I'd like to try out for the team, if I'm not too late.

Joan - You are. Go away.

Kennedy - Clamp it, female Girardi.

Joan - He's totally copying me!

Luke - I am not!

Kennedy - Oh...sibling rivalry. Healthy motivator. The Williams sisters, the carpenters, Donnie and Marie-- not so much. Grab a spot on the floor, Mr. Girardi.

Joan - (Snapping her fingers to get Luke‘s attention) Hey! You! [Softly] You're going down!

Tommy - Ok, dive rolls. 10 of 'em. Find a clear path. And... 1...

Tommy starts them off. Does summersaults all in a row without standing up. Then Joan does one roll. Then gets up and takes a few steps.. Then takes another roll and gets stuck at the end because the mat is not flat.

Joan - coach...coach kennedy... I'm stuck...

Coach Kennedy help her up.. She does one more roll.. Looses her balance and then falls into the pool. As she dog-paddles to stay afloat, she mouths to Luke “You’re going Down” and we cut to a commercial.

When we return, we join Kevin and Beth on their date.

Beth - Do you want to finish mine?

Kevin - Mm-mm. If I eat any more grease, I'll be flammable.

Beth - [Giggles]

Kevin - So how's school going?

Beth - Great. I mean, as great as studying economic structure using linear algebra can be.

Kevin - [Clears throat] Um, I'm really glad you wanted to come eat... bad food with me.

Beth - Me, too.

Kevin - You know, I, um... I stared at the phone for, like, an hour before I called you. (He puts his hand on hers. She keeps it there for a moment and then pulls her hand away.)

Beth - Kevin... uh...

Kevin - is it... (Points to his chair)

Beth - of course not. How could you even go there?

Kevin - I-it is the one big thing that's changed since we were together. I mean, I'd-- I'd understand--

Beth - Kevin, it's been 2 years. I can't just pick up like it was yesterday.

Kevin - You're right. I'm sorry. I thought that maybe this was, uh... a date.

Beth - Maybe I thought it was a date, too. I just need time.

Back to Dive practice. Joan is standing on the high diving board. She is wearing a read swimming suit. Coach Kennedy is yelling from the ground.

Coach Kennedy - Before the water evaporates, miss Girardi.

Joan - I can't!

Suddenly we are aware that this is a dream. There are students laughing at her from the ground and then Judith appears.

Judith - It's ok, jo-jo. So, you gonna dive, or what?

Joan - Great. Now you're gonna get on me about this, too?

Judith - Just let yourself go. You can do it.

Then, a man with a saw is cutting the diving board.. She is going to fall.

Joan - No! Stop it! Stop it! I can't! Stop! Please stop it! Don't! I can't! I can't do it! Please stop!

Her alarm goes off and she is awakened with a start.

Back to the police station.

Will - Who knew I'd love the narcs?

Carlisle - They found our guy.

Will - No. His supplier. Vladimir Karpovich. They're waiting to take him down to see if he gave them someone higher up the food chain.

Carlisle - But we're taking him now because he'll lead us to where Edwards is.

Will - Couple of narcs are outside his place waiting for us.

Carlisle starts to put on his jacket, Will stops him.

Carlisle - What?

Will - Kevlar. Guy's got company. Does small arms on the side.

Carlisle - Hell of a businessman.

Dive practice again (this time it’s a real practice and not a dream)

Joan comes in from the girls change room at the same time as Luke and Tommy from the boys room. Luke looks embarrassed in his speedo. A little small when standing next to Tommy.

Coach Kennedy - Ok! Tadpoles! Swan dives off the low board. Keep 'em simple and straight. Line up! Beasley, go! (A nice dive there) Figliola. (a very painful looking dive and the others laugh)

Coach Kennedy - Don't...do that. [She blows her whistle] Female Girardi.

Joan Jumps off the board and does the worlds best belly flop. Definitely... don't do that!

She gets out of the water.. Walking like she has a very bad sunburn.

Coach Kennedy - Male Girardi. Don't emulate.

Joan - Ow.

Luke gets up onto the board and just stands there looking at the water.

Kennedy - [Blows whistle] Mr. Girardi, I'm not known for my patience. [Blows whistle] Mr. Girardi...

Luke - I, uh... I don't-- I don't feel well. I'm sorry. (Luke rushes out, Joan looks sorry for him)

Beasley - Don't forget to adjust your bra, Girardi!

Coach Kennedy - Button it, Beasley. Ok...miss palmer.

To Will and Carlisle at the narc house. They are getting read to go in.

Carlisle - Gum?

Will - No, thanks. (Carlisle shoves a piece into his mouth) Hey, take it easy. Guy actually has to understand his Miranda rights.

Will’s cell phone rings. He answers.

Will - Girardi.

Lucy - Will? It's Lucy. Listen, as it turns out, there's 5 guys, maybe more in there. So I'm sending in S.W.A.T. I want you to come back to the station.

Will - You want S.W.A.T., Fine, but this is my case. I'm making the arrest.

Lucy - No, you're following orders, and I want you to come on back to the station. Do you copy that?

Will - Yeah, but we're already here. I'm running the scene. You signed off on it.

Lucy - I am your commanding officer, detective Girardi, and I am telling you to get your ass back to the station right now or I will suspend you. Do you copy that?

Will - Yeah. I copy.

Will hangs up the phone, turns around and walks back to his car.

Carlisle - What’s going on?

Lucy, in her office, looks sad about the call.

Back at school, Joan is still walking like a sunburn. She walks past a female janitor who is laughing.

Janitor - [Laughing] Oh, great dive, Joan.

Joan - God mocking humans? That's nice.

Janitor- Belly flop. Eternally funny. Nothin' I can do about it.

Joan - Funny? Look at me. I'm a beet.

God - Yeah. Ha ha ha. But the low board doesn't scare you. You didn't dream about the low board.

Joan - If I did a belly flop from the high board, I could have exploded! I take physics. I know these things. And don't mess with my dreams. Using Judith to get me to do this-- if there was someone over you, you would be in a lot of trouble.

Janitor - [Chuckling] Ohh... ha ha ha ha ha...

God walks away and Joan leaves the school walking like a sunburnt person. We cut to Helen and Will at night getting ready for bed.

Helen - but they arrested the guy, and you still get to interview him, right?

Will - Yeah. When he lawyers up.

Helen - So what does it matter who actually slapped the cuffs on him?

Will - It's my case, Helen.

Helen - So? In a dangerous situation, your boss chose caution over putting you at risk? I don't even like her, and that sounds like a good call to me.

Will - (Getting defensive) You don't understand. I shouldn't have said anything.

Helen - Oh. So... I don't get to have an opinion? You're just gonna keep running around busting down doors without a thought that you have a family that might actually want you to stay alive?

Will - (stepping back (mentally) and realising they are fighting over nothing) Helen...what just happened?

Helen - I'm scared. Ok? I'm scared.

Will - Ok. I'll be careful.

Helen - It's not just that. It's... it's Kevin and the lawsuit. It's Joan going nuts from lyme disease. It's...Judith. Everything. Every time the phone rings-- I know we've been hit with a lot, but-- I can't talk about this with you.

Will - Helen!

Helen - I can't. You won't understand.

Will - No, I won't. Not if you shut me out.

Helen - It's god. I'm... scared of god. Ok? I'm afraid of what he'll do next. ...

A commercial break here, and then we see, later that evening, Helen coming into the Kitchen. Kevin is already there, digging into his ice cream.

Helen - Oh. Hey.

Kevin - Hey.

Helen - I didn't think I'd find anyone still conscious.

Kevin - Beth-on-the-brain. She isn't sure about us. She needs time.

Helen - I'm sorry.

Kevin - What do you think of that... needing time?

Helen - It's normal. Means she really cares about you.

Kevin - Ok. So what exactly happens during this... time?

Helen - (Sitting down to scoop some ice cream) She searches her heart... and she... thinks about her life and... what the future would look like with you and without you.

Kevin - Girls really think about all that, huh?

Helen - We can spend 2 hours thinking about shoes.

Kevin - Man, guys are just like either into a girl or not. [Both chuckle] It's just... when I'm thinking about her, I... I get this dull ache in my gut, and it only goes away when I'm with her.

Helen - The wound that can only be healed with the sword that inflicted it.

Kevin - Hmm?

Helen - The troubadours. They wrote that the only person that can heal that wound is the one who caused it.

Cut to another Dream of Joan’s. She is standing again at the end of a diving board.. But this time she is wearing PJ’s. then Judith appears behind her.

Judith - You know you have to do it, Jo-Jo.

Joan - [Laughs] Why? Have you been talking to god?

Cute boy God - (stands beside Judith) We know you can do it, Joan.

Joan - I should have known.

Judith - Just let go.

Joan falls backwards and lands in the water on her back with a scream.

Then she wakes up and goes into the hall. She hears grunting coming from Luke’s room.

Joan - (calling upstairs) Luke, you're not naked, are you?

Luke - No. [Grunts]

Joan goes upstairs and sees him doing sit ups.

Joan - Wow. Dedication. You feeling better?

Luke - I wasn't sick.

Joan - Look, if you're still trying to prove yourself against Kevin...

Luke - Grace accused me of being a coward.

Joan - Grace rags on everybody.

Luke - She's right. I couldn't dive because I was afraid I'd look stupid.

Joan - Hey, if I let that stop me, I'd never do anything.

Luke - You know, I've structured my whole life to be risk-free, never allowing for a situation where I might fail. So I've cut out whole realms of experiences that I want to be a part of. I just... I just don't want to live half a life anymore. (Sobs) Just forget it.

Joan - Hey... Luke, it's not like it's over for you.

Luke - Just go, ok?

Luke changes to Leg lift sit ups and Joan turns to leave. Then she comes back and starts to do sit ups with him.

Cut to the coffee house the next day. Lily is sitting by herself when Will comes to talk to her.

Will - Lilly Watters?

Lily - Yeah. Ha. Am I all you expected?

Will - Well, you're hard to miss.

Lily - Thanks. Take a load off. Well, you guys are 4 for 4.

Will - How's that?

Lily - Good-looking family. I met Kevin, too. He could be a model. Well, you know, for handicapped crap.

Will - Yeah, listen, I'll try to make this short.

Lily - No, no. Take your time. Ha. You saved me from spin class. Talk about hell on earth...

Will - I'd just like to get to it. Helen's probably told you I don't believe in god. Anyway... last night Helen told me she's afraid. of-of god. It's big for her, not something that's gonna go away on its own. And she seems so sad... I don't know how to help her.

Lilly - Bummer.

Will - Yeah. I-it is. I was hoping you could talk to her about it, you know, get her through it.

Lily - Me?

Will - Well, you're her spiritual adviser, right? I mean, you're the one leading her down this road to this god who seems to be making her miserable.

Lily - We talk about stuff.

Will - So talk to her. Tell her not to be scared of your god anymore.

Lily - There's no magic switch.

Will - Then what the hell good is a religion if she's scared of it? Isn't the whole point of god to provide comfort?

Lily - Look, you raise some good questions--

Will - I'm not here for a panel discussion. I want to help my wife.

Lily - Questions about faith and god--they're backbreakers, man. I mean, they're filled with contradictions. Like a cop who doesn't believe in god asking for spiritual help. Ha. Blows my mind. I mean... it must mean something... right?

Willy - So that's it. That's all you've got?

Lily - Pretty much.

Cut to Joan and Adam walking in the halls at school.

Adam - Yeah. So I'm going with your mom to the cemetery. And it's a chance to stop by my mom, too. You could come even if you think it's dumb.

Joan - I can't. I have to dive.

Adam - Oh, yeah.

Joan - So, um... wish me luck.

Adam - Wear a parachute.

Joan - Say hi to Judith for me.

Adam - Yeah.

Cut to the police station again.

Will is in his office as Lucy walks by.

Lucy - So we still not talking?

Will - No. I mean.. we never were not talking.

Lucy - Sure could have fooled me.

Will - Look, you gave an order. I was unprofessional. It won't happen again. Oh, and for the record, Helen sided with you. Caution. She's your biggest fan now.

Lucy - Well, I don't mind going head to head with somebody every once in a while, you know. I think that's healthy. It's the passive aggressive jerks that really piss me off.

Will - Look, you knew I could have handled it. Dragging me off like some damn rookie was just wrong, and you know it.

Lucy - I had to.

Will - Had to? You had to pull one of your best officers? Why?

Lucy - I don't have to explain myself to you, detective.

Will - Why?

Lucy - Because I thought that-- I thought that if... and I know it's part of the job, but if something had happened, I-- (Will looks shocked to see her true feelings) well, don't look so surprised, Will. Everybody has feelings. Even me.

To Dive Practice. Tommy is doing sit ups in front of Glynis and two other girls.

Glynis - (about his abs) Amazing... transcript value.

Tommy - Hardest substance on earth, ladies. You can touch it if you want.

Coach Kennedy - You better be wearing a bathing suit, Mr. Belkin.

Tommy - Hey, coach.

Coach - What'd I tell you, Tommy?

Tommy - Uh...no sit-ups in front of the girls. Won't happen again.

Coach - Ok, folks! Now it gets fun. Strap on your oxygen masks. Straight dive off the high board. Line up. Ok... Mr. Girardi.

Joan - Hey! I remember you in Farrington. You were awesome!

Coach - Glad to see you're feeling better, mr. Girardi. (He gets up on the board.. Looks over the edge) Ok...mr. Girardi. [Blows whistle] Dive, mr. Girardi. (Just stars at the water) Mr. Girardi, if you still don't feel well, perhaps you'd feel better on the bowling team.

The students laugh and Luke runs down.

Tommy - What a dork!

Joan - Luke--

Tommy - don't forget to change your panties!

Joan pushes him into the water.

Coach - You are outta here, miss girardi!

Joan - - No! No, I have to do this.

Coach - Move your Keister before I have you suspended.

Joan - Please, let me just take one dive! I promise you'll never have to see me again!

Coach - Out! Now! Now!

Joan runs out and we cut to a commercial.

When we return, it is evening already. Luke is sitting at his computer when there is a knock on the door.

Luke - I'm working.

Grace - (Comes in anyways) I was in the neighbourhood.

Luke - Really?

Grace - No, but... makes this easier, so go with it. Ok. Look, just... forget that stupid diving team. That whole rant, that was--I was-- I mean I-- are you gonna make me go on?

Luke - No.

Grace - (She turns to leave) Ok. I talked to my mom. (on her way out) Finish your homework.

Next, we go to Beth and Kevin. Beth has invited Kevin to her dorm

Kevin - Wow, you are a slob! I love that in a girl.

Beth - You're sick.

Kevin - This is exactly like your room at home-- same cake sticker on your Discman, Ben Folds Five poster.

Beth - Yes, but the Bobble-head collection is new.

Kevin - And very impressive. Thank you for letting me come over.

Beth - Of course.

Kevin - I just--I didn't know if we were ever gonna be able to just... you know...hang again. So... how's that time thing coming? (Beth Giggles) I want you to know as you take this time, I'm already at pathetically... crazy about you.

Beth - Kevin--

Kevin - and I want you to know that I am a different person now. I floss every day. Except for weekends. But even dentists don't floss--

Beth Kisses him. Then she takes his hand.. Sits on his lap and puts her arms around his neck. They kiss some more. Then she gets embarrassed and lays on her bed and puts a pillow in front of her face.

Beth - oh, god!

Kevin - Man, from a simple conversation about dental hygiene... weird things turn you on, huh?

Beth Throws a pillow at him and he goes to put a CD On. He drops the CD and Beth notices his chair, and I think, for the first time, it really bothers her.

We cut to ANOTHER dream of Joan’s. This time it is Judith on the diving board, wearing a pretty yellow dress.

Judith - It's easy, jo-jo. Don't let the fear hold you back.

Joan - Maybe if you had been a little more afraid, you'd still be alive.

Judit - Mm. No. See... I think what my problem was... I was running from what I was afraid of. Don't do that. Just surrender and...

She dives off the board and does a beautiful dive with turns and flips.

Before Judith hit’s the water she turns into a million glowing spots fills the room.. Joan stares at the spot where she used to be, and realises that god wanted her to visit Judith’s grave.. Not Dive. Joan wakes up slowly and we cut to the dive practice where everyone is warming up.

Coach - Ok, 10 minutes of stretching, people. Find a partner.

Luke is already on the diving board.

Coach - Mr. Girardi? (Students Laugh) Mr. Girardi, I want you off that board... right now!

Joan and Grace stand in the door way of the pool room, watching.

Luke jumps off. Doesn’t really do a great dive.. But he over came his fears.

He resurfaces and starts shouting. “Whoo hoo hoo! Whoo!

Grace goes to be with him. Joan is so proud.

Cut to Helen sitting on the couch at home. Will comes home.

Helen - You're home early.

Will - Slow day. Supplier on Judith's case is still making deals before he'll give up the guy who murdered her. I'm on call. (Looking at Helen’s book) Emily Dickinson. Uplifting.

Helen - Felt like poetry. I heard about your little fight.

Will - Oh, yeah?

Helen - When were you gonna tell me? (Will thinks he’s caught and that She knows Lucy has feelings for him) Will, I had a session with Lilly today. Did you think she wouldn't tell me you two talked?

Will - Ha. I, uh--I thought you'd get mad.

Helen - Mad?

Will - I yelled at her.

Helen - She's very annoying. [Both laugh] I've been so alone because... I knew how you felt. But even with that, you heard me. (She hugs him) I'm sorry I didn't trust you.

You can tell Will feels bad for lying to her. We cut back to the school. Cute boy god is standing there.

Joan - Oh, you really are omnipresent, aren't you?

God - I get around. What your brother did...took a lot of guts.

Joan - Yeah, well, I had my doubts there... right up till the end.

God - Everyone does. Fear is very powerful. It paralyses people. They don't see the value in it.

Joan - In being terrified? No. We don't. Because we're not insane.

God - But you saw Luke, how happy he was. He found that other half of his life that he wanted. You think that would have happened if he kept running from what he was afraid of?

Joan - Ok, ok! I'll suit up and dive.

God - I never said you had to dive.

Joan - Hello! You've been all over me about this. What about the dreams?

God - The dreams weren't about the high board, Joan. You know that.

Joan is stunned and then we cut to Joan and Adam walking in the cemetery.

Joan - If you need to go to work...

Adam - no, no. It's ok. Called in. Oh, it--it's over there.

Joan - I don't want to see her name. The date...

Adam - well, you don't have to, you know. We can--

Joan - no, no. I have to. I have to do this part alone, though.

Adam - Ok.

Joan walks over to her grave and looks down at the headstone.

Joan - I...I didn't think to bring anything 'cause... well, what are you gonna do with flowers? So... things are pretty much the same, which is weird. Although, Luke did this... this awesome dive off of the high board which wasn't really a dive dive. It was more like... Will Ferrell falling out of a plane. You would have peed yourself. (She kneels down by the head stone and brushes snow off of it.) (BTW.. Joan is wearing mittens and a scarf… and considering this is filmed in southern California.. Amber must be boiling) Can I say that in a cemetery? Anyway, Luke did it. Oh, and he and Grace are a public item. Ha ha ha... ah, it's a freak show. And you're, um... you're... [Sobs] Dead, and I didn't come before because... I was so scared... that if I had to say good-bye, you know...the real one where I have to admit that I'm never gonna see you again... it would hurt so much... to let go like that. And it might never stop, but... (She traces the date carved into her headstone with her fingers) but I have to. Good-bye. (She kisses her hand and puts it to Judith’s name) I love you.

The last scene is Joan walking towards Adam. From a distance we see her cry into his shoulder, they look back at the headstone and then turn to leave. Fade to black on “Dive”
